Dan Quaye Reacts To Hearts Of Oak’s Heavy Defeat To WAC

2 min read

Former Hearts Of Oak defender, Dan Quaye has stated that the current crop of players lack the quality he and his teammates possessed during their time.

The Phobians on Sunday suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat in the hands of Wydad Athletic Club in the second leg fixture of the final preliminary round of the Caf Champions League in Morocco.

The Ghanaian champions hope of causing havoc after leading 1-0 in Accra turned out to be a massacre against them.

Reacting to the embarrassing scoreline, Quaye indicated that the squad lack the needed experience compared to their era.

“In Our time players like Charles Taylor, Charles Allotey, Amankwah Mireku, Joseph Ansah etc were deemed as the best squad ever to be assembled by Accra Hearts of Oak, after winning the CAF Champions League, CAF super cup, FA cup and Ghana Premier League in 2000/01.

“Currently, Phobia has a good team, but in our time, we had quality players in the team.

“Hearts of Oak have had some very good teams in the past, like the one that won the Ghana Premier League with a record 78 points, or even the group that went unbeaten in the 2003 league season. However, the then coach Cicil Jonas Attuquafier’s class of 2000 was totally at a different level.

“The performance of the current Hearts of Oak squad is also outstanding but cannot be compared to the 64 battalions,” according to the defender.

” No, it’s a mistake to make that comparison. They haven’t reached there because in our time we were in the national team for so many years before coming to Hearts of Oak and they can get that experience if they play for two to three years, and do better but this team cannot be compared to our time.

“We want a squad to break that record because it’s been so many years after that and it is good for them to do that.

“We never lose a single game in even our qualifiers to the end of the competition in our time.”

The 40-year-old defender was among of Hearts of Oak team in 2000 who won the CAF Champions League, the CAF super cup and the league, famously called the 64 battalions.
