Former Ghana international Sam Johnson has urged Ghana Football Association to plan a testimonial match in honour of Asamoah Gyan when he retires.
The technical handlers of the Ghana Football Association have maintained Andre Ayew as substantive captain of Ghana, with Thomas Partey and Richard Ofori as his assistants excluding Asamoah Gyan.
The 34-year-old has not had the best of times with the Black Stars of Ghana in the last year. There have been calls for his retirement after 17 years of great service to the heaviest African country.
However, Gyan has insisted that he still has what it takes to continue his career despite the recurrent injuries.
Sam Johnson believes that the Ghana FA should organise a testimonial game for Gyan if he finally decides to retire from active football.
According to the former Ghana defender, it will be nice if the Ghana FA hold such games for Ghanaian players
“It would be good for them to organise a testimonial match, but I don’t think they will do it. It’s never in their minds to organise such ceremonies for our players, ” he told Hello FM.
“It would have been good for Ghana to do that but as I said they wouldn’t do it.
“I hope they’ll listen and find something to do. Have you seen them organised such programmes for the great players who played for Ghana before our era?
” It is never in their minds but it would have been a nice thing to do.”
Ryan scored on his international debut against Somalia in a 2006 World Cup qualifier against Somalia in 2003.
He has continued to become Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 106 appearances and 51 goals.
He is also the highest-scoring African at the World Cup with 6 goals to his credit. In 2010, he was named BBC African Footballer of the Year.
Again, Gyan is the second-highest scoring Ghanaian at Afcon with eight goals.
