Berekum Chelsea ran out 2-1 winners over Legon Cities at home in the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) Sunday.
The match-day 18 tie, originally scheduled for Golden City Park in Berekum, was moved to Dormaa due to the decision of the Club Licensing Board to revoke the match venue license of Berekum Chelsea.
It was a remarkable victory for the Bibires, who weathered the visitors’ storm and took their chances when they came.
Having dominated the opening period, Berekum Chelsea took a deserved lead a minute from the break.
Bright Amponsah punished Fatau Dauda who was caught way out of position by lobbing the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to register the first goal.
After squandering many chances, Berekum Chelsea were made to rue those opportunities as Hans Kwofie perfectly connected to a corner kick with a header to pull level in the 77th minute.
But the parity lasted just three minutes as Stephen Amankona put the Bibires back ahead connecting the ball home from close range after goalkeeper Fatau Dauda had parried a shot away.
Legon Cities thought they had snatched the equalizer again late on but it was ruled out for offside by referee Yao Bless.
Cities coach Bashir Hayford was left fuming after the game alleging that the lie of the match officials had been threatened by the home team at halftime hence some bad calls against his side in the second half.
Now on 24 points, Berekum Chelsea occupy 8th position while Legon Cities sit just above the relegation zone with 19 points from 18 games.
