Ghanaian clubs should take a cue from my performance and sign experienced players – Awako

2 min read

Accra Great Olympics midfielder, Gladson Awako believes that his performance in the ongoing Ghana Premier League is making a case for experienced players who wish to return home to continue their career.

Players who once tasted the domestic league sometime find it difficult to get opportunities when they decide to return home as they are labelled as ‘veterans’ or ‘old men’.

Awako left USLC side Phoenix Risings before the commencement of the 2020-21 Ghana Premier League and signed for the Dade Boys.

The U-20 and Afcon and World Cup winner has been impressive so far winning three man-of-the-match awards for Great Olympics and providing some assists.

He believes that Ghanaian clubs should admit players who tasted the league some time ago.

“Sometimes, I think our clubs are making mistakes when they see players that have already tasted the league.

“They tag them “old men”, “veterans”, I think they should stop that.

“I think there are more players out there that feel they want to come and play the league again.

“I am an example and I have not done badly.

“So when they start saying “old men”, “veterans” it doesn’t sound well at all so I think they should stop that and allow other players to come,” Awako told Adamu Muftawu.

Awako, 29, tasted the domestic league in the books of Hear of Lions before joining Berekum Chelsea where he played a key role in their 2010/11 Caf Champions League campaign after winning the Ghanaian top-flight.

He joined Congolese club, TP Mazembe after a year at Berekum Chelsea.

He went on loan to fellow Congolese club, Don Bosco and later signed for USLC side, Phoenix Risings after the expiration of his contract with Mazembe.
