Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, is set to face a setback as forward Antoine Semenyo’s shin injury puts his participation in the final two qualifying games of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in doubt.

Semenyo sustained the injury while playing for Bournemouth, forcing him to sit out their recent match against Chelsea.

The injury could potentially sideline him for the crucial upcoming matches against Madagascar on June 18 (away) and Central African Republic on September 4 (in Ghana).

Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil confirmed the unfortunate news, stating that Semenyo will also miss the remaining league games.

“Antoine has had surgery, so he will be out until next season,” O’Neil revealed.

“We’re hopeful that he has a speedy recovery and can rejoin the team for a period before the season starts, but it depends on his recovery time.”

Despite the setback, O’Neil expressed optimism about Semenyo’s recovery and his potential contribution in the future.

Semenyo, who joined Bournemouth in January, has made 11 appearances in the Premier League and scored his first goal against Leeds United a few weeks ago.

The 23-year-old striker also netted his maiden goal for Ghana’s Black Stars during the AFCON qualifier against Angola in March.
