DOL Super Cup: Accra Lions beat Samartex to win bronze

2 min read

Accra Lions FC emerged winners of the bronze medal after a 3-1 win over FC Samartex 1996 in the third-place match of the maiden Division One League (DOL) Super Cup competition Saturday morning.

In what was a second meeting in the competition at the Madina AstroTurf, the newly-promoted Ghana Premier League side were in imperious form from start to finish as they bettered their 2-1 win over the Timbers from the group stages.

A Christopher Acheampong opener and a brace from Fatawu Hamidu did the damage for Lions rendering Giyas Ibrahim’s strike in between a mere consolation for Samartex.

Acheampong set the tone with the first goal, trapping a long pass from the back and expertly finishing it off from inside the box in the 23rd minute.

Then right on the half-hour mark, left-back Hamidu made it 2-0 with a strike into the rooftop from an unfancied angle after initially taking a corner kick short.

Samartex gave themselves a chance to get back in the game by pulling one back early in the second half.

Striker Giyas Ibrahim pounced on a loose ball after a poor clearance attempt and slotted it through the legs of the Lions keeper – deficit halved in the 53rd minute.

While Samartex chased the equalizer, Hamidu put the win beyond doubt with a firm free-kick in the 86th minute – his brace in the third-place decider.

Accra Lions ended up 3-1 winners and cemented the third position in the maiden DOL Super Cup competition. They received a GH¢5,000 cheque in addition to their bronze medals.
