Former Kotoko striker Shilla Alhassan opposes pay-cut idea
1 min readFormer Asante Kotoko striker, Shilla Alhassan has kicked against the idea of pay-cut for Ghana Premier League players in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2019/20 football season has been suspended due to the novel disease. The situation has made it difficult for clubs to pay salaries of players and officials of the clubs due to the financial implications.
As a result, many have suggested that the players accept pay-cut to lessen the clubs with the financial difficulties that have saddled all institutions.
But Alhassan believes that the idea will deepen the woes of the local players who are on a paltry salary.
“No, I don’t think it [pay-cut] is not prudent in our case. The players will struggle if their salaries are reduced,” he told Kumasi-based Kessben FM.
“Some players take GHS 200 or GHs 300 as monthly salary so how will that player survive.
“For Kotoko it might be a little bit okay but most of the players in the league will struggle. It should not be encouraged at all.”
At the moment, AshantiGold players and technical staff have agreed to a 20% pay-cut.
Reports indicate that Asante Kotoko will also be implementing a 30% pay-cut after a successful meeting with the playing body.
