Young midfielder Clinton Opoku to stay at Asante Kotoko

In a surprising twist, young midfielder Clinton Opoku is poised to continue his football journey with Asante Kotoko, despite not initially featuring in coach Prosper Narteh Ogum’s plans.

Joining the club two years ago from the now-defunct Phar Rangers FC, the 20-year-old midfielder encountered uncertainty regarding his role with the Porcupine Warriors after being designated as “surplus to requirements.”

However, recent developments have brought about a shift in direction. Local media reports suggest that the club’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) has intervened in the matter. The IMC is said to have rejected the coach’s proposal to outright terminate Opoku’s contract.

Instead, the club is exploring the potential of sending the talented young player out on loan, offering him the opportunity to further develop his skills and gain valuable experience elsewhere.

Opoku’s commitment to Kotoko is secured until the culmination of the 2025/26 season. His tenure with the club has been marked by a series of unfortunate injuries, including a knee surgery that resulted in a substantial period of absence from the field.

These setbacks have limited his appearances on the pitch, with the young midfielder participating in just six league matches for the team based in Kumasi.

Kotoko, who faced disappointment in the previous season, is currently stationed in Beposo, diligently working to reverse their fortunes for the upcoming campaign.
