Women’s Premier League match-day 3 preview – Southern Zone

Day two of the Women’s Premier League in the Southern zone was characterized by three away wins and one. In all 14 goals were scored on match day two across four League centres. Here is a preview of the upcoming matches in the Southern Zone.

Police Ladies v Soccer Intellectuals

Police Ladies came back stronger over the weekend to beat Sea Lions 1-0 in an away fixture after dropping points in their League opener. Juanita Aguadze’s strike, gave them all three points in Elmina against Sea Lions in an entertaining affair at the Nduom complex. The victory puts them third on the zonal league log and will be looking to continue the good form at home. Soccer Intellectuals were a delight to watch but leaked badly against Berry Ladies to lose 3-1 in that thriller. The last meeting between the two sides saw Mary Essiful and Mary Berko coming through with a goal each in a one all drawn game at the McDan La Town Park. It remains to be seen which squad Coach Ali Yakubu will name for the game but their shaky defence is one which Police Ladies will be looking to prey on. A high pressing game is expected from both sides and that could result in avalanche of goals at the McDan La Town Park.

Berry Ladies v Sea Lions FC

Berry Ladies have won their opening two games, by dispatching their opponents in a professional manner. The team went into an overdrive against Soccer Intellectuals last Sunday away at the Adu Yaw – Asassan Park with Felicity Asante netting a hat-trick. Nina Norshie and Ernestina Tetteh have both slotted into the spine of the team effortlessly, with both of them marshaling the midfield and creating chances for their compatriots upfront. Sea Lions Ladies have not been in the best of form in their opening two league outings and a late slip against police ladies last weekend cost them their second successive loss of the season. Coming up against a Berry ladies’ squad that is rich in quality, Coach Maapa Inkoom’s players will have to be at their best for 90 minutes to get results. The last outing between both sides ended 2-2 draw at the Tema park.

Hasaacas Ladies v Thunder Queens FC 

Second placed Hasaacas Ladies will look to extend their fine performance on match day 3 especially at their favorite Sekondi Gyandu Park. They have amassed four points from their first two games of the season despite playing away. Doris Boaduwaa and Milot Abena Pokua have been starved of supplies upfront, with both players, yet to get off the mark and this fixture could be the starting point. Thunder Queens gave away a 2-0 lead as Ladystrikers came from behind to win in a 5-4 show down at the Tema Community 8 school park, a score line that was least expected. Goalkeeper Rose Teye Baah was poor in post as compared to her first outing this season against Police Ladies, having saved a penalty in the process. Last season, Thunder Queens pulled a surprise by snatching all three points from Hasaacas Ladies on match day 1 courtesy an own goal credited to Leticia Adjei. Coach Edna Quagraine has a daunting task going into this fixture.

Ladystrikers v Immigrations Ladies

Ladystrikers are fresh off a fantastic away win at the Tema Community 8 Park, putting five past a hapless Thunder Queens on match day 2, a performance least expected after losing 2-1 on match day 1 to Hasaacas Ladies.  A brace from Catherine Arthur and a goal each from Suzzy Dede Teye, Gifty Addai and Sarah Inkoom sealed the historic win for the ‘’strikers’’. It’s been a roller-coaster first two weeks for Immigration Ladies, with the club dropping its opening game to Berry Ladies before holding Hasaacas Ladies to a goalless draw in a dominant display on match day 2. A lone goal from defensive stalwart Gladys Amfobea separated the two sides and handed Ladystrikers a win last season.
