Wollacott not scared to lose Black Stars goalkeeping spot to Ofori

Ghana shot-stopper, Joseph Wollacott claims he has no fears of losing the Black Stars number one goalkeeping spot to Richard Ofori, despite his recent return from injury for Orlando Pirates.
An injury to Ofori paved way for Wollacott to recieve a call-up to the senior national team in October 2021, as the Swindon Town glovesman went ahead to make his debut for Ghana in the 2022 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe.
The England-born Ghanaian held the fort in the absence of the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and made 6 appearances for the Black Stars in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and 3 outings at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the 25-year-old doesn’t feel threatened by the return of Richard Ofori from injury but respects the opportunity to work alongside the South Africa based goalie.
“Was I afraid? Probably not because that can happen with any other goalkeeper and you have to respect it was his position before I came to the national team. It’s good working with him. We get on well. He pushes me and I push him. I have a lot of respect for him,” Wollacott told Accra based Happy FM.
Wollacott’s invitation to the Black Stars was met with a lot of criticisms, as some fans felt a goalkeeper plying his trade in the English fourth tier league should not be called up to the senior national team. But, his recent improved performances for Ghana has silenced his critics.
“Yes its not nice to read stuff about you but I try not to listen to it. I just want to focus. I’d like to think I have proven a lot of people wrong. I know there’s more to do. Joe Hart is my role model. He’s always proved people wrong even though they think he’s not good enough,” he added.
