WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship: Côte D’Ivoire beat host nation Niger, Benin pip Togo in Group A

The 2022 U-20 WAFU Zone B Championship got underway in Niamey, Niger earlier today.
Host nation Niger got the tournament underway against Ivory Coast at the Stade Général Seyni Kountche.
The game ended 1-0 in favor of Ivory Coast. Seydou Traore scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute, beating the goalkeeper with a header.
Niger missed a good opportunity to level the score in the 68th minute from a spot-kick, Moussa Ibrahim struck the post.
Skipper for the Ivorians Arafat Doumbia picked up the man of the match award.
In the second game of the day, Benin defeated Togo 1-0, Farid Edou scored the only goal of the game in the 60th minute. He took advantage of an error by the Benin defense.
Benin’s Zoulkaneri Seibou was named man of the match.
The competition will continue tomorrow, with the opening game of Group B set to take place. The group consist of only three teams after Cape Verde pulled out.
The only game to be played tomorrow will see holders Ghana play Nigeria at the Stade Général Seyni Kountche at 17:00 GMT.
The WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship serves as
qualifiers for the U-20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The finalists will secure a place at the AFCON to be played in Egypt between 18 February to 12 March, 2023.
