Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango retires from international football

Uganda captain Denis Onyango has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper confirmed on Monday evening.

Following the failure of The Cranes not qualifying for the upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after being kicked out by Malawi on the final day of qualification, Onyango has now decided to hang up his gloves.

The 35-year-old, considered as one of the best players to have played for the national team aided Uganda to qualify for the Afcon 2019.

Onyango issued his immediate retirement to the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) today which was accepted before he confirmed the news via social media.”It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from international football,” the Mamelodi Sundowns keeper said.

“After much consideration, my family, managers and I, decided it was in my best interest to hang my gloves on my beloved Cranes. Big thanks to every Ugandan over the years.”

Onyango amassed 80 caps for the East African nation since making his senior international debut against Cape Verde in June 2005.
