Bayern breeze past Barcelona

Barcelona 0 Bayern Munich 3 Full time

Scorers: Müller 34′, Lewandowski 55′, 85′

Bayern Munich put in another clinical performance against Barcelona as they left the Camp Nou with three thoroughly deserved points.

It took 34 minutes for the deadlock to be broken as Thomas Müller’s strike from the edge of the area found the net via a huge deflection off Gerard Piqué.

After Marc-André ter Stegen made several big stops to keep his side in it, he was beaten again shortly after half-time when Jamal Musiala cracked a strike against the post and Robert Lewandowski reacted brilliantly to stud in on the rebound.

And when he got one, the insatiable Pole just had to add a second, doing so with five minutes remaining when he again reacted fastest to a shot coming off the woodwork to keep a cool head and finish things off.

Lukaku gives champions perfect start

Chelsea 1 Zenit 0 Full time

Scorers: Lukaku 69′

Holders Chelsea started with a win in a contest that didn’t all go their own way at home to Zenit.

It took a long time for the Blues to break Zenit’s resistance but it came on 69 minutes when César Azpilicueta swung a perfect cross onto the head of Romelu Lukaku, who made no mistake with the finish to bag the points.

Juventus finally up and running

Malmö FF 0 Juventus 3 Full time

Scorers: Sandro 23′, Dybala pen 45′, Morata 45+1

Juventus picked up their first win of the season at the fourth attempt with a comfortable 3-0 win against the Swedish champions on the road.

They struck first blood in Sweden as a cross from the left was met by a stooping Alex Sandro header for his first Champions League goal midway through the first half.

They then finished the first half with a flourish as Paulo Dybala scored from the spot for a second before Álvaro Morata pounced with a lob from close range to put the game beyond doubt.

Points shared in thriller

Villarreal 2 Atalanta 2 Full time

Scorers: Trigueros 39′, Danjuma 73′ ; Freuler 6′, Gosens 83′

The great entertainers Atalanta began with a draw against the Europa League holders in an exciting affair in Villarreal.

Atalanta took an early lead when Remo Freuler was found in the box by Duván Zapata and he lashed in via the upright.

But Villarreal levelled before the break when a deflection saw the ball fall Manu Trigueros’ way in the area and he made no mistake from close range before they punished Freuler’s attempt to play out from the back late on to take the lead, allowing Arnaut Danjuma to fizz in on the volley.

However, Robin Gosens rescued a late point when he pounced upon a loose ball in the box to level things up against a Yellow Submarine side who finished with 10 men after Francis Coquelin’s dismissal.

Lille left frustrated by big call

Lille 0 VfL Wolfsburg 0 Full time

Lille were left rueing what might have been after a big decision saw them forced to settle for a point at home to Wolfsburg.

That bold call came shortly after half-time when Jonathan David netted, only for VAR to rule it out after the ball apparently went out of play in the build-up. If it did, the margins were miniscule.

Their spirits were soon lifted again though when John Brooks was shown a second yellow card for a nonsensical handball but Lille failed to capitalise and turn the advantage into a win.

Dynamo denied at the death

Dynamo Kyiv 0 Benfica 0 Full time

There was nothing to separate these sides in their opener as they were forced to settle for a point in Ukraine.

Dynamo will be left wondering how they didn’t win it in injury-time though when they brought two good saves out of the goalkeeper and hit the post twice before having a goal disallowed by VAR all in the space of 60 frustrating seconds!

Young Boys stun Man Utd with late winner

BSC Young Boys 2 Manchester United 1 Full time

Scorers: Ngamaleu 66′, Siebatcheu 90+5; Ronaldo 13′

Young Boys came from behind to beat ten-man Manchester United 2-1 after scoring a last-minute winner in Bern.

Cristiano Ronaldo had given United the lead inside the first 15 minutes when he got on to the end of Bruno Fernandes’ outside-of-the-foot pass to side-foot home as the far post.

But the tide of the game changed when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off for a late challenge on Christopher Martins in the 35th minute.

The hosts dominated the majority of the possession from that moment on and David Wagner’s side got their reward in the second half when Nicolas Ngamaleu reacted first to get on to a deflected cross to poke the ball past David De Gea at the near post.

And in the last minute, Jesse Lingard’s poor backpass was short and played Jordan Siebatcheu through on goal who slid past De Gea to complete the turnaround.

Champions League penalty history made during chaotic draw

Sevilla 1 Salzburg 1 Full time

Scorers: Rakitić pen 42′; Sučić pen 21′

Karim Adeyemi spurned the first Salzburg spot-kick wide after being fouled by Diego Carlos. The 19-year-old was then pushed over in the box by Jesus Navas to give the Austrians a second bite of the cherry.

This time Luka Sučić stepped up to place the penalty down the middle to give the visitors the lead.

The same pair were involved for the third with Adeyemi having been fouled AGAIN but this time Sučić struck the post.

Sevilla then got in on the act when Youssef En-Nesyri was fouled by Maximilian Wöber, with Ivan Rakitić sending Philipp Köhn the wrong way to level proceedings.

However, they played the majority of the second half with ten men after  En-Nesyri was sent off for receiving a second bookable offence after appearing to dive in the box.
