U-23 AFCON Qualifiers: Afena-Gyan earns Black Meteors call up
1 min read
Felix Afena-Gyan, a striker for Cremonese, has been invited to join the Black Meteors camp ahead of their U-23 AFCON qualifiers against Algeria.
Despite his team’s lowly position in the Serie A table, Gyan has been called up to reinforce the Black Meteors’ offense for the crucial games after being initially left out of Tanko’s team, which had invited eight foreign players.
Gyan’s prior experience with the Black Stars, having aided Ghana in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before being dropped from the final squad, may have influenced the decision to include him.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko and his squad aim to secure Ghana’s place in the U-23 AFCON tournament, with the first leg of the final qualification round scheduled for March 24th in Annaba, followed by the return leg in Kumasi four days later.
The U-23 Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Morocco in June of this year, serving as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The top three teams from the tournament will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament in Paris.
