On Tuesday night, the Black Stars of Ghana put up a solid defensive strategy to hold the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Mishood Abiola stadium in Abuja to a 1-1 draw. Not many gave the Black Stars a chance to qualify over the Nigerians.

With the game ending in a goalless draw in Kumasi, the Black Stars had a tall order. The team despite the pressure managed a draw courtesy Thomas Partey’s early goal.

The team has returned to Ghana and this afternoon met with President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House. Coach Otto Addo led the team to the Presidential villa and introduced the team to the president.

After that, each player took the microphone and introduced himself and his club to the president. Partey took applauds when he started the introduction and this was followed by the other players.

When it got to first keeper, Jojo Wollacott, there was a cacophony of sounds as the entire team cheered him on. It took a while for the room to be silent and then Jojo did his introduction. This was followed by a resounding applauds and shouting from his team players.

Wollacott who plies his trade in the English League Two was brilliant against Nigeria, making some key saves and he is likely to be the first choice for Ghana at the World Cup after establishing himself for his country.

Ever since earning his first call-up earlier this season, Wollacott has proven himself on the world stage and has turned in a number of impressive performances for Ghana.

As a result, he became his country’s No. 1 Goalkeeper and played a key role throughout World Cup qualifying, culminating in arguably the peak of his young career so far.

After the introductions, it was the turn of President Akufo-Addo to interact with the team.

The President thanked the team for giving him a perfect birthday and congratulated them on their performance both in Kumasi and Abuja. He also called for unity and determination to ensure that the team does well in Qatar.

He pledged a package for the team and jokingly reminded Otto Addo that he will be kidnapped and made to stay in Ghana.
