My best was not enough to keep me at Kotoko – Umar Bashiru
1 min readFormer Asante Kotoko midfielder, Umar Bashiru has admitted that his best was not enough to land him a starting role in the club.
Bashiru was deemed surplus to requirement by the technical team of the Reds before the start of the 2020-21 season.
He joined the Porcupine Warriors for the 2018/2019 Ghana Premier League under the tutelage of current Black Stars trainer, CK Akonnor. But he struggled to break into the starting line-up of the Ghanaian giants.
Bashiru signed for fellow premier league side Karela United this season and showed his qualities on the matchday one of the 2020-21 season against Ashantigold in Obuasi.
He registered an assist and a put up a man-of-the-match performance that saw his side securing a vital away point at the Len Clay Stadium.
Speaking to the media after the game, Bashiru said; “There’s a huge difference between Asante Kotoko and Karela United” Bashiru said.
“The demand and pressure at Asante Kotoko was very high, there were also a lot of very good players too so that made the competition for a starting place more difficult.
“I did my best but, it’s only that my best wasn’t enough.”
Bashiru has had a stint with West African Football Academy.
