Match Report: Calamitous day at the office as Legon Cities earn bragging rights in City derby

2 min read

Legon Cities FC beat rivals Great Olympics 2-0 in an entertaining regional derby on Sunday afternoon to earn bragging rights over their arch-competitors.

Following Kotoko’s win against Berekum Chelsea in Obuasi earlier today, Oly Dade’s loss to Cities means they will lose the top spot position to the Porcupine warriors. Meanwhile, Cities extend their points gap between them and the relegation zone to four with the vital victory.

Legon Cities manager Bashir Hayford handed top marksman Victorien Adje Adebayor his first start since joining the club in the second transfer window.

Shamsu Alhassan and Issaka Mohammed replaced Nasiru Moro and Francis Nicholas respectively from the lineup that played against Berekum Chelsea last week.

Former Black Stars goal keeper Fatau Dauda was also ousted to create room for wilfred Honu in posts.

Coach Annor Walker made only one alteration to the side that beat Medeama SC 1-0 in Accra last week. Maxwell Abbey returned to the starting lineup in place of Joshua Rhule.

Olympics looked to dominate possession but were powerless to control Cities counterattacks. They went behind in the 60th minute when substitute Mensah headed home a corner from Adebayor.

The Royals doubled their lead in the 71st minute after Jonah Attuquaye slotted home from close range.

They even came close to scoring the third as Olympics fine surge was brought to a halt.

The loss means Olympics drop to second place on the league standings, one point behind their next opponents Asante Kotoko.
