'I wasn't paid $100,000' - CK Akonnor denies Sports Minister's claims

Charles Akonnor, the former Black Stars coach, has refuted claims that he received a $100,000 exit package after his dismissal from the national team role in September 2021.

Akonnor responded to the assertion made by Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, who stated that the former Asante Kotoko coach did not leave empty-handed and was paid $100,000 as his exit package.

“I never received the kind of money the minister mentioned. I don’t want to disclose the exact amount they paid me, but it was not $100,000 as the minister said,” Akonnor clarified to Graphic Sports.

He also mentioned that his contract is still with the FA, and the Minister can verify the agreement they had to confirm the inaccuracy of his claim.

According to Graphic Sports, the former Ashanti Gold manager also clarified that he was paid in cedis, not dollars.

The Minister had made these statements during a press briefing on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, admitting that the government still owed Akonnor and ex-Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac.

”Both C.K. and Milovan, once their contracts were terminated, we sat with them and negotiated their exit, and C.K. was paid $100,000 immediately after the negotiation, same as Milovan.

”We still owe both of them, and we have a payment schedule which I admit we have not followed because of a constraint of funds. As and when we get funds, we will pay the two coaches,” he assured.
