'I don't talk to my father anymore because he's always asking for money' - Ghana defender Denis Odoi reveals

Black Stars right-back Denis Odoi has revealed that he doesn’t talk to his father anymore.

According to the Club Brugge defender who was born in Belgium to a Belgian mother and a Ghanaian father, he stopped talking to his father because his father requested for money anytime they spoke.

“My father and I, we don’t talk any more. I blame him for certain things, like when I became a professional football player and made good money at Anderlecht and was annoyed with him because all he asked was, ‘Can I have money?’” he told The Times in January.

Despite the sour relationship between Odoi and his father, the 33-year feels connected to Ghana and has a lot of positive things to say about Ghanaians.

“Obviously, Ghana is a part of me. I have a difficult relationship with my father, he is the part that is Ghanaian for me. So, this is an ideal opportunity to find out what Ghana is: the part of me that is Ghanaian and see where certain things come from, I guess,” Odoi said as quoted by NewFrame.com.

“Everybody here is just more straightforward and will tell you as it is. But also, it’s like a feeling of togetherness, everybody is open, welcoming to one another. Everybody wants to help you.”

Odoi made his debut for Ghana’s Black Stars in March, at the age of 33, helping the four-time African champions qualify for the 2022 World Cup by overcoming archrivals Nigeria on away goals in a two-legged play-off.

The Club Brugge defender is expected to be named in the team that will represent the western African nation at the Mundial scheduled for November in Qatar. Ghana is drawn in Group H with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.
