Ghana coach CK Akonnor names 23-man squad for Sudan doubleheader

Black Stars Head Coach, CK Akonnor has announced his squad for the upcoming AFCON qualifying doubleheader against Sudan next month.

The squad, 23 in total are set to feature in what will be Coach Akonnor’s first competitive assignment following his appointment early this year. The former Black Stars captain enjoyed his debut last month when he faced Mali and Qatar in international friendlies.

The games with Sudan originally were supposed to be his first games in charge but had to be deferred after the Coronavirus pandemic disrupted the world football calendar.

The squad sees the return of several well-known players to the setup as the Coach opts for a fine blend of youth and experience.

The usual names including Andre Ayew, Thomas Partey, Richard Ofori are included while Jordan Ayew gets an invite although he recently returned to training after recovering from COVID-19.

The squad also sees a return to the national team for John Boye and Harrison Afful after lengthy absences. Boye last played for Ghana at the AFCON 2019 tournament while Afful last played for Ghana in November 2018.

Another returnee is Baba Abdul Rahman who has had injuries affect his career progression.

Some players who impressed the last time out for Ghana; Benson Annan, Alexander Djiku and Tariq Fosu have also been retained.

Coach C.K Akonnor has named only one debutant in his squad; 19 year old SpVgg Greuther Fürth midfielder Jamie Leweling is also included.

Ghana will be hosting Sudan at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on November 12 and then play the reverse fixture on November 17 in Omdurman.
