Dan Owusu, a former Ghanaian international, has come to the defense of Athletic Bilbao striker, Inaki Williams, who is yet to score a goal for the Black Stars in his seven appearances for the team.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, the former Ghana Premier League top scorer asserted that Williams is not a bad striker and called on Chris Hughton to work on the team’s attackers.
Owusu pointed out that the primary objective of football is to score goals, and if a team cannot do so, it cannot progress. He went on to state that under Hughton, Ghana has not been scoring enough goals, which is a problem.
In the two games Hughton has managed, the team has scored only two goals (one in each game). Owusu believes that the team needs to work on the strikers to improve their goal-scoring ability. He singled out Williams, who has been scoring for his club but struggling with Ghana, as a player who needs to be worked on.
“In football, there are means to an end, that is to score goals and if you are unable to score, you cannot progress. Under Hughton, the team has not been banging in more goals and it is a problem”
“In the two games in charge, the team has scored two goals (one in each game), they need to work on the strikers on how to score the goals. Inaki Williams is not a bad striker, he has been scoring for his club but struggling with Ghana, so we need to work on him and other strikers” he said.
Ghana secured four points from two games under Chris Hughton in the AFCON 2023 qualifiers, winning one and drawing the other against Angola. The team struggled to score more than one goal in each game, prompting Owusu to call on Hughton to work on the team’s attackers to score more goals in matches.
