CAF Confederations Cup QF: Dreams FC stun Stade Malien in first-leg in Bamako

2 min read

John Antwi’s second half brace was enough to hand Dreams FC an important 1-2 away win over Malian giants Stade Malien de Bamako at the Stade du 26 Mars in the first leg of the CAF Confederations Cup quarter-final.

Coach Karim Zito announced a strong line up for the game having put in-form Solomon Agbasi in goal. Youngster Abdul Aziz Issah returned and made the cut alongside Godfred Atuahene, Agyenim Boateng, experience John Antwi and others.

Whiles Stade Malien started on a blistering note in search of an early lead, the ‘Still Believe’ lads looked very resolute and cautious with their approach in the early stages.

The home side continued to make some goal incursions but were struggling to unlock the backline of Dreams FC- who were also on top in terms of possession.

Back from recess, Stade Malien returned on a higher note and jumped into the lead in just eight minutes from the break from Yoro Diaby. Just what the home fans were waiting for.

On the 67th minute, highly-determined Dreams FC mounted so much pressure and made series of incursions which eventually got them the leveller through John Antwi.

Few moments later, there was a penalty incident which occured in the homesters territory and was subsequently confirmed by VAR.

John Antwi once again elected himself for the kick and scored nicely to put the ‘Still Believe’ side in front of the first time in the game.

In a quest to getting the leveller, the home team were reduced to ten men after Fady Coulibaly was shown a straight red card with three minutes to play.

It ended 1-2 for Dreams FC who return to Ghana with a huge advantage heading into the second leg.

The return encounter is slated for April 7, at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
