Bechem goalie Iddrissu not eager for Black Stars call-up

1 min read

Bechem United goalkeeper Abdulai Iddrissu is not eager for a call-up to the Black Stars despite consistently proving himself in the Ghana Premier League with oustanding performances for the Hunters.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper, who joined Bechem United in October 2020, has conceded 14 goals in 23 GPL appearances, recording an impressive 16 clean sheets. He picked up the Nasco Man-of-the-Match award in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Hearts of Oak at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park after pulling impressive second half saves to deny Phobian attackers Afriyie Barnieh and Obeng Junior.

With the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Central African Republic approaching, Abdulai Idrissu insists he is fully focused on Bechem United’s GPL campaign but would welcome a Black Stars call-up if invited.

“I’m doing what I’m supposed to do. If what I am doing merits a national team call-up and the gaffers in charge of the national team think that I have to be part, no problem but right now, it’s Bechem United and nothing else,” Iddrissu told Startimes in a post-match interview.

If invited, Idrissu would have to challenge for a spot in the goalkeeping department, which boasts of Swindon Town’s Joseph Wollacott, Richard Ofori of Orlando Pirates, Eupen’s Abdul Manaf Nurudeen, Lawrence Ati-Zigi of St. Gallen and Hearts of Oak’s Richard Atta.
