Asamoah Gyan denies shunning Kotoko for Legon Cities

1 min read

Ex-Black Stars Captain, Asamoah Gyan has explained that his decision to join Legon Cities when he returned to the Ghana Premier League in November 2020 from India, was only because he wanted to enjoy his home in Accra after many years of playing abroad.

The 36-year-old former Rennes and Sunderland striker recently reiterated his desire to play for Asante Kotoko before he retires from active football, but insisted he would need about 3 months to regain his fitness before concluding the dream move to the Kumasi based club.

It would be recalled that Gyan struggled with fitness concerns during his one year stint with Legon Cities, where he made 7 appearances for the Royals following his debut on November 27, 2020 in a goalless draw against Medeama SC.

“I needed to be in Accra after 17 years of playing in Europe so I chose to play for Legon Cities. I have now enjoyed Accra so I can move to Kumasi and play for Kotoko. I was so upset the day Kotoko fans booed me, but I know they love me,” Gyan told Accra based Asaase FM.

The 2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year award winner, who is yet to retire from professional football, spent 17 years of his career playing for nine clubs in Europe and Asia including Udinese, Rennes, Sunderland, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, NorthEast United and Kayserispor.
