AFCON 2023 Qualifier: Ghana host Angola in Kumasi - Preview

Chris Hughton is set to kick off his tenure as head coach of Ghana in a highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Thursday. The experienced Irishman will be aiming for a successful start as the Black Stars begin their bid for a 10th consecutive AFCON appearance.

In their last outing at the 2022 Africa Nations Championship, the home-based Black Stars suffered a disappointing exit at the quarterfinals stage. However, they will be looking to bounce back in the AFCON qualifiers, having started their campaign with a 3-0 win over Madagascar but were held to a 1-1 draw by Central African Republic.

Angola also began their AFCON qualification journey with a win over Central African Republic but were held to a 1-1 draw by Madagascar. They will be looking to make an impact against Ghana and secure a spot in Ivory Coast.

With both teams currently separated by only goal difference in Group E, this match is a potential decider in their race for qualification. Ghana holds a slight advantage heading into the game, having won their last six home matches across all competitions.

Hughton has called up a strong squad, including Nottingham Forest striker Andre Ayew and Arsenal’s Thomas Partey. Angola has named an experienced squad featuring striker Gelson Dala and goalkeeper Hugo Marques.
