Chelsea survive Luton scare, Liverpool edge Norwich to book FA Cup quarter-final slots

Chelsea came from a goal down twice as they narrowly beat Luton 3-2 in the FA Cup fifth round tie played on Wednesday night.

The hosts made a brilliant start as Reece Burke headed them in front after just two minutes, connecting perfectly with a Luke Berry corner ball.

Chelsea then worked their way back into the match, but they had to wait until the 27th minute to find an equaliser.

Luton lost the ball inside their own half, with Chelsea making short quick passes and Timo Werner managed to find the bottom corner with a good shot from just outside the box for his first goal in a Chelsea shirt.

The Blues then took control of the match from that moment onwards, creating numerous scoring chances and could have added to their lead were it not for good goalkeeping.

The hosts however took the lead against the run of play just before the break when Harry Cornick got on the end of a brilliant pass and fired a precise shot that went inside the right post.

Thomas Tuchel’s men came back for the second half ready to battle for the win, and they pulled level on the 67thh minute when Timo Werner turned in a Ruben Loftus ball.

Werner then turned provider in the 80th minute as he found Romelu Lukaku with a neat pass inside the box, with the Belgian tapping home for the win.

This will be the sixth time in the last seven seasons that the Blues are into the last eight of the competition.

At Anfield, Takumi Minamino scored a first-half brace as Liverpool comfortably saw off Norwich 2-1.

Fresh from winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday, coach Jurgen Klopp made 10 changes to his starting team, with Jordan Henderson the only one to retain his spot.

Alisson Becker, who was on the bench on Sunday was recalled, replaced Caoimhin Kelleher who has since become a hero at Anfield following his heroics at Wembley.

Liverpool came close to taking a ninth-minute lead when Curtis Jones expertly controlled a neat clever pass on the edge of the penalty area but smashed his effort against the crossbar.

Teemu Pukki then got a chance to give Norwich the lead on the quarter-hour mark when he collected a precise pass inside the box and sliced a shot but it went a whisker wide of the left post.

Finally Liverpool took the lead in the 27th minute when Divock Origi found Minamino inside the ebox with a neat pass, and the Japanese didn’t wast time, finding the back of the net through the middle of the goal.

He then added a second as the clock ticked towards half-time, giving the Reds a comfortable lead.

Liverpool hit the post for the second time when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got a chance in the 51st minute as Norwich survived.

There were few chances for both sides, until the visitors halved the deficit with a quarter-an-hour to go when Lukas Rupp neatly controlled a decent pass from Joshua Sargent, looked up, and smashed an unstoppable drive into the bottom left corner from the edge of the box.

That however proved to be just a consolation as Liverpool held on for the win, meaning they will be in Thursday evening’s draw.

In another match on the night, Southampton beat West Ham 3-1 to book their place in the last eight of the competition.

Romain Perraud, James Ward-Prowse, and Armando Broja scored for the Saints, with Michail Antonio scoring the consolation for the Hammers.
