4 likely reasons why Moses Antwi Benefo resigned as head of communications at Kotoko
2 min readMoses Antwi Benefo resigned from his role as head of communications at Kotoko on Friday and has become the second person to leave the club within 24 hours after Maxwell Konadu was sacked.
Antwi Benefo, who double as host of Kumasi-based Nhyira FM’s Sports Show, was appointed by Nana Yaw Amponsah just weeks into his appointment as CEO of the club.
The outspoken broadcaster and former employee of Ghana National Petroleum Company – GNPC lasted just 4 months at the helm.
Following his resignation speculations have been flying around as to why he resigned.
- Constant bashing from Kumasi media
Antwi Benefo came under perpetuated attacks from his former colleagues in the Kumasi media space. Some described his style of communication as primitive which cannot help the new cause and agenda of the club and constantly heaped pressure on him. The outspoken broadcaster who doubles as host of Nhyira FM’s sports show was regarded by many in the industry as using his office to access vital news content ahead of them.
- Deteriorating relationship with Nana Yaw Amponsah
The former head of communications has been one of the most loyal characters around the Kotoko CEO since he entered the Ghanaian football space. He rigorously campaigned and designed schemes and strategies for him during the 2019 Ghana FA Presidential elections and played a key in Nana Yaw securing the Kotoko job as the CEO. But, the last days smooth communication has broken down and things appear top to bottom between the CEO and the head of communications which ultimately made him feel there was lack of consultation in decision-making.
- Dedicate more time to radio duties
Antwi Benefo, affectionately called PJ Mozay, is still huge figure in the Ghanaian media space in the sports sub-sector. Since his appointment to the role of head of communications he had had to manage his time with the two jobs limiting his presence on the radio show. His resignation will afford him the time to return to the job he loves most.
- Disagreement with Maxwell Konadu sacking
Though the head of communications must not be consulted before a decision is taken on the fate of the head coach but he felt it was a wrong timing to sack the former Ghana international. During his interview on Accra-based Happy FM on Friday Antwi Benefo insisted that Maxwell Konadu remains a very good coach but was evasive with answers as to why he was not allowed to continue if he is a good coach.
