Former Ghana international Rabiu Mohammed has insisted that the Black Stars will miss the services of Asamoah Gyan in the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Gyan is Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 106 appearances, and he is also Africa’s leading top scorer with six goals at the FIFA World Cup.
He has been to several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments since making his debut in 2003 against Somalia, losing the title on two occasions (2010 against Egypt and 2015 against Cote d’Ivoire in the finals).
The former Sunderland and Al Ain talisman is currently without a club and has ruled himself out of participating in the tournament despite showing interest a few months ago.
But Rabiu, who was a member of Ghana‘s U-20 FIFA World Cup winning squad in Egypt in 2009, believes the boots left by Gyan to be filled are wide.
The former Liberty Professionals midfielder is concerned about the absence of goals that Gyan’s exit would bring.
However, he also believes that his absence could end up being positive for the team as a whole, as the new strikers will aspire to emulate him.
“We are going to miss Asamoah Gyan a lot going into Qatar 2022,” Rabiu Mohammed told Kumasi-based Akoma FM in an interview.
“With the presence of Gyan in our team, we were assured of at least a goal.”
“Coupled with our solid defense, Ghana could win games with Gyan’s goal.”
“It’s unfortunate we don’t have him.” We are going to miss him. “But I’m sure the new strikers will aspire to be like him and deliver the goals for us.”
Coach Otto Addo has Inaki Williams, Jordan Ayew, Felix Afena-Gyan, Antoine Semenyo, and others to choose from to lead Ghana’s attack.
Ghana has been pitted against Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea in Group H.
The tournament is slated to start from November 20 to December 18, 2022.
