2020/21 GPL: Preview: Kotoko in a bid to revive title ambitions against Liberty Professionals

2 min read

Asante Kotoko will be in action on Monday afternoon in a match-day 8 fixture in the Ghana Premier League against Liberty Professionals after their controversial exit from the CAF Champions League.

The last game of the match-week 8 is scheduled for 3 pm at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The encounter promises to be cagey as Kotoko will be hoping to make amends after failing to progress to the group stage of the Champions League.

The Porcupine Warriors exited the competition without kicking a ball in the 2nd leg of the final preliminary round after failing to assemble the required number of players for the epic clash against Al-Hilal in Sudan last Wednesday.

Seven players out of 22 who made the trip tested positive for COVID-19. Upon their arrival in Ghana, it was announced by the club that four of the players have tested positive contrary to what happened in Sudan.

This means that Kotoko will go into the game with a depleted side against the Scientific Soccer Lads who have lost just one game in the season so far.

Johnson Smith will be hoping to secure a win to revive the title ambitions of the Reds but would have to beat a side that is expected to provide a stern test on the afternoon.

Kotoko has control over the fixture in recent meetings as they have recorded 13 wins, 6 draws and 5 defeats in the last 24 encounters.

Kotoko, with an outstanding game against Ebusua Dwarfs, is lying on the 12th position with 9 points, 6 points adrift of leaders AshantiGold.

Liberty Professionals on the other hand are occupying the 8th position with 10 points from 7 games.

The game will be Live on StarTimes.
