Kwadwo Obeng Jnr's contract with Hearts of Oak expires, no talks of renewal

With his contract at Hearts of Oak now expired, Kwadwo Obeng Junior is currently a free agent, opening up the possibility of a move in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Obeng Junior’s contract officially ended on June 6, leading to speculation about his future as he could potentially leave the club on a free transfer. Reports indicate that Hearts of Oak is unlikely to offer the striker a new contract as they aim to rebuild and rejuvenate the team following a disappointing season where they narrowly avoided relegation on the final day.

The 23-year-old, who recently celebrated his wedding, has been linked with a potential move to an undisclosed European club. Obeng Junior initially joined Hearts of Oak in April 2018 from Nea Salamina Ghana (now Wamanfo Mighty Royals FC), where he played a vital role in their successful FA Cup campaign the previous season, reaching the quarter-finals.

Prior to his arrival at Hearts of Oak, Obeng Junior was regarded as one of the most promising young talents in the Division One League. In the 2017 season, he made a strong impact as one of the top strikers, scoring thirteen goals in the league and three goals in the Ghana FA Cup, including notable strikes against Steadfast FC and Asante Kotoko.

In 2020, Obeng Junior signed a three-year contract extension with Hearts of Oak. He concluded the 2020/21 season as the club’s leading scorer in all competitions, finding the back of the net eleven times in twenty-five matches, with ten of those goals coming in the league.

Despite his previous successes and contributions to the team’s Premier League and FA Cup victories, Obeng Junior has faced criticism and unfair treatment from some segments of the club’s fanbase due to a recent goal drought. He managed to score three goals in the recently concluded campaign.

Confirming the news on Oyerepa FM on Wednesday morning, Obeng stated, “Yes, my contract has indeed expired, and now I’m considering my next steps. I will be discussing my future with my manager and exploring the possibilities. I will follow whatever guidance he provides.”

When asked about his desire to continue his relationship with Hearts of Oak, he expressed no issues with the team and indicated that he would not hesitate to sign a new deal if the club were to offer one.

“I am solely focused on my work, and I don’t have any problems with the club. So whatever they decide, I’m fine with it. Although I have received several offers from other clubs, I am currently considering what Hearts of Oak will propose.”
