‘Get more Europe-born Ghanaians to play for Black Stars’ – President Kufuor

1 min read

Ex-Ghana President, John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the GFA to continue persuading more Europe-born players of Ghanaian descent to switch nationality and play for the Black Stars.

The GFA has already made overtures to England-born trio Eddie Nketiah, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tariq Lamptey, German-born Ansgar Knauff and Spanish born Nico and Inaki Williams to switch allegiances and feature for Ghana at the 2022 World Cup.

According to ex-President Kufuor, who’s a former Chairman of Asante Kotoko, most of these Europe-born Ghanaians are given more playing opportunities at their clubs that prepare them to reach top class status, since they are products of the same systems that honed their talents.

“As good as our boys are playing club football internationally, their chances there don’t tend to be as good as those who we would say are of the soil,” ex-President Kufuor told Accra based Peace FM.

“When we find such people (Europe born players of Ghanaian descent), we should encourage them to come back and play for Ghana. They are Ghanaians. I think it’s good,” he opined.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has confirmed that he would decide on his nationality switch in the summer, while Tariq Lamptey recently rejected a call-up to the England U-21 team, as he considers the offer of the GFA to play for the Black Stars.
