The round of Sixteen of the ongoing 2023 Ashanti Regional Inter-school soccer competition commenced on Wednesday morning, producing some exciting scenes in the first game involving Former Champions Adu Gyamfi SHS and last year’s abandoned competition finalist T.I. Amass, Kumasi.
Adu Gyamfi SHS started on a high note and managed to score the Opener through a well converted free kick by Emmanuel Boateng but T. I. Amass staged an impressive comeback equalizing through Henry Boateng and scoring two additional goals to make it 3-1, thanks to Felix Amponsah’s brace.
In the 2nd match of the day, Kumasi Anglican SHS were stretched to their elastic limit but organized themselves well to score a last minute goal through Godwin Akansadi to the agony of Tweneboa Kodua SHS who were impressive.
Simms SHS continued their impressive display in the tournament under the tutelage of former Fabulous Ladies and Black Queens forward Sandra Boakye as they accounted for Aduman SHS by 1-0 through Isaac Gyabeng to pick the next quarter final slot. It was a match of coequals with little to choose between the sides but a last minute goal for Simms did all the damage.
Islamic SHS battled Prempeh College in the 5th match of the day. It was a balanced game beautifully played on the turf but it was Islamic SHS that took the lead through Adu Gyamfi Socrates. Prempeh dictated play throughout the game but they failed to utilize their chances as Islamic held on to their solitary lead to close the game sending Prempeh College out of the Tournament.
Mankranso SHS caused another upset by beating Asanteman SHS by 1-0. Mathew Frimpong netted the only goal of the match.
Osei Kyeretwie SHS versus Okomfo Anokye SHS ended in a scoreless stalemate. OKESS had to struggle to win 5-4 on penalties to advance to the quarterfinals. It was quite an interesting game as the two sides neutralized themselves in the game until it ended scoreless before OkESS won the tie.
Sakafia SHS defeated Bosome Freho SHS 3-2. Sakafia took a two-goal lead through Abdul Basit Abdulrahman before Abraham Assmoah pulled one back. But Joseph Narbil restored Sakafia’s lead before the first half. After recess, Abraham Asamoah grabbed his second goal on the day.
Isaac Acheampong Oppong, and Solomon Wakril scored a goal each for Our Lady of Grace SHS against Church of Christ SHS to end the last game of the day.
There will bbe no games on Thursday and Friday due to the upcoming Kumasi Metropolitan Junior High School athletics competition which will be held at the Baba Yara Stadium on the days mentioned above.
The competition will resume next week Monday, July 31, 2023, for the quarterfinals pairings.
