Asamoah Gyan finally announces retirement

Asamoah Gyan has finally called time on his playing career.

The former Liberty Professionals striker has announced his retirement from playing at the age of 37.

He confirmed when he gave a speech at the 30th Afreximbank Annual General Meeting at the Accra Conference Centre on June 20, 2023, that he has officially called time on one chapter of his career and will now become a player scout, coach and do other things related to football.

Asamoah Gyan last played competitively in the Ghana Premier League with local side Legon Cities two seasons ago after signing a one-year deal with them.

Gyan remains Ghana’s all time leading scorer with 51 goals from 109 appearances for the Black Stars.

He is the first Ghanaian to score at the World Cup.

Gyan is also Africa’s highest scorer at World Cup with 6 goals.

He was the first player in football history to score in 9 consecutive major international tournaments.

Gyan was voted 2010 BBC African Player of the Year after an impressive display at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

When he first left Ghana in 2003, he joined Italian Serie A fold Udinese, where he spent two seasons out on loan at lower division side Modena.


He was transferred to French outfit Stade Rennes in 2008 and left the Ligue club for then English Premier League side Sunderland after a fine performance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa

His career has also seen him play for Al Ain and Ahli Dubai in the UAE, Shanghai SIPG in China and Kayserispor in Turkey.
