Ghana goalie Richard Ofori scores to send Pirates into Confed Cup semis

1 min read

Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori saved a penalty and converted the final spot kick to ensure Orlando Pirates beat Tanzania’s Simba 4-3 to advance to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals on Sunday night.

Although Pirates went into the second leg of the quarterfinal tie 1-0 down, Ghanaian striker Kwame Peprah found the breakthrough with a header past Simba goalie Aishi Manula in the 60th minute to keep the Buccaneers in the tie.

Peprah, an ex-King Faisal attacker, was withdrawn to the bench in the 77th minute, as his place was taken by Gabadinho Mhango.

It was left to the lottery of penalties to decide the tie, and the shootout began promisingly for Pirates, with goalkeeper Richard Ofori making a fine save to keep out the night’s first spot-kick.

With the spot kicks level at 3-3, Ofori bravely stepped up and converted the final penalty, sending the Buccaneers through to the semis.
