“We are going through the process of using VAR in our leagues but…..” – GFA boss Kurt Okraku

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku has revealed the association’s willingness to introduce the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the local league.
According to the GFA chief, there are ongoing talks with the world’s football governing body FIFA for its implementation.
Officiating has long been a problem of the Ghanaian leagues, especially in the Ghana Premier League and the National Division One League.
Amid the use of VAR in other jurisdictions to support the work of referees, the GFA says it is also exploring the possibility of bringing the technology to Ghana.
However, Ghana FA boss Kurt Okraku indicated that the challenge is that the VAR technology is very expensive.
“We are going through the process of using the VAR in our leagues. Our referees’ manager Alex Kotei has been at the forefront of dealing with FIFA and we are exploring the possibility of using the technology.
“But what is true also is that it’s too expensive,” Kurt Okraku told GTV Sports Plus.
In April last year, the Ghana FA announced that FIFA has approved a project team, which is the second key step in the implementation process of the VAR.
The Project Team was made up of referees manager Alex Kotey, Prosper Harrison-Addo, Eyram Dzikonu, Henry Asante Twum, Sena Akoto-Ampaw, Julius Enumah, Jamil Maraby and three CAF instructors.
The FA aimed at implementing the technology at the start of the 2022/23 football season. However, with the latest revelation, it remains unclear whether that will materialize.
