Mohammed Salisu rejects call to play for Ghana

2 min read

Ghanaian defender Salisu Mohammed is not ready to play for the senior national team of Ghana according to the country’s head coach C.K. Akonnor.

Akonnor has revealed that the Ghana FA has made several attempts to invite the young defender to play for the Black Stars but all have been fruitless for unknown reasons.

Salisu, 21, is currently one of the best defenders in world football following his amazing outing with Real Valladolid in the 2019/20 Spanish La Liga season.

The industrious defender joined Valladolid’s youth setup in 2017 from Ghanaian lower tier side African Talent and has so far made 34 first-team appearances.

The rocky defender has scored 1 goal and provided 1 assist.

Salisu was handed a debut call-up to the senior national team of Ghana for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe last year.

He failed to honour the call-up under Coach Kwesi Appiah citing injury as an ‘excuse’ for his absence.

But according to the new Black Stars of Ghana coach Akonnor, the Ghana FA’s attempt to invite the Kumasi-born to represent the West Africans has been turned down by the player.

“Yes, we’ve tried to reach out to him [Salisu Mohammed] but we’ve been unsuccessful,” coach Akonnor told Angel TV.

The promising defender does not look ready to represent the Black Stars after revealing in an interview with footballmadeinghana.com that he will only be available for any junior national team but not the senior side.

He’s currently the subject of numerous transfers with several clubs chasing him but reports claim he’s penned a 4-year deal with Premier League side Southampton.
